I see many people posting on Facebook that they are having a tough time with their kids being home. While every situation is different, many parents are faced now with both working from home and having to temporarily homeschool their kids.

Let’s all take a deep breath and think about this. Our kids love us and we love them. Sure, we want what’s best for them, but what’s best for them right now is to have you as emotional support. So, now is a great time to teach them things that they will never learn in school. They can learn how to cook. You can teach them about taxes (for those of you working on that), and budgeting. You can teach them how to garden (it’s a great time to plant their own food). Teach them crochet and knitting, sewing. You can also keep them up to date on academic school if you choose to. We live in the age of the internet. There are numerous, wonderful websites where they can still gather information and even play games to help them learn. I’m not an expert, but here’s what I do when my kids are home.

1. We go outside when we can. Whether it’s to swing on the swing set or just so they can run around. If your kids are older, turn this into homeschool time. Look at the things around you. Do you have a dandelion poking out of a crack in the driveway? Turn that into both a science and a morality lesson. That dandelion doesn’t care that that rock is on top. It’s pushing through the toughness and thriving anyway...now, go research dandelions. Give a report on them, (for whatever is appropriate for that age).

2. It’s ok to let your kids do chores. Both yard work and housework. You may find that the chores are getting easier because you have helping hands.

3. Spend time with them watching t.v., playing video games, playing board games, or simply playing make-believe. Don’t worry about being an adult for a little while.

4. Have activities they can do like drawing, coloring, play-doh, and things like that. You can join in or use this time to get your own work done.

5. Read to them, even if they are older, or have them read to you. You can listen to a story while you cook a family meal.

6. Still ground them if you need to. You can take away the electronics if you need to.

7. When you have work that you absolutely have to do, that’s a great time to let them watch T.V. in another room, play in their room, or get their academic work done. Schedule a “quiet time” for yourself and let them know that’s when you have to work. After a few days, they will settle down when they realize that’s part of the routine.

8. Have a routine. Some kids need a schedule. It helps them feel more secure if they know what to expect. Other kids are fine without one, so get to know your kid and what’s best for them.

9. Chill out. Kids often act out when they notice we are upset or panicking. Enjoy your time with them, but separate yourselves when you need to. They can go to their room and you go to yours. Or wherever you need to go. And remember, they are human too, and they have emotions, but sometimes they have a harder time explaining how they feel or even understanding what they feel. So, above all, just try to be patient. This can either be a huge struggle, or a great blessing. Control what you can by making the most of what you have.

10. Teach by example. In other words, children mimic the behavior that they see in the adults around them. Now is the time to stay level-headed.

Hang in there, parents. We’ve got this. We may find that our children have a thing or two to teach us. May you all stay healthy during this weird time we live in. Best wishes! K. L. I started writing this back years and years ago. The final draft I began in 2012, and yes, it has taken me this long to complete it. To those of you who have been waiting, just know that I am working very hard to get it out by the end of this summer. I have edited, re-written, and nitpicked every detail. With that being said, I'm sure there might still be a couple of spots that can use work, but I want to deliver the best book to you that I can. I just have a few loose ends to tie up (like deciding on the final title and cover). It won't be long though, so keep checking for updates on this site, my facebook, and sign up for my email list. You can also check out my author page on Amazon where you can purchase previous books as well as leave reviews. Also see my previous post to let me know what you think of cover concepts.
I have been thinking about my cover for Angels & Hunters: book two of the Dark Angel Wars. I've been playing around with different media and design programs. These were designed on my phone. Thoughts on these concepts? Do you like the ideas or no? Comments would be greatly appreciated.
Of all the flowers in the world, I have to say that I'm the oddity that appreciates the dandelions. I think they are so much more than the irritating weeds that so many people think are waging war on their lawns. Dandelions have many uses (for more on this there are many articles and recipes), and are vital to bee populations, but even more so to me, they represent my childhood wishes. How many of you remember playing outside on warm sunny days, blowing the dandelion seeds to make a wish?

The flowers outside our store

Me and my seventeen month old daughter love going outside and picking dandelions. I am teaching her about making wishes on them. It is a tradition. One that I am proud to uphold and that builds a bond between me and my daughter. I believe children's wishes are much more than wishes. They are dreams, and hope. They are the wildest imaginings and emotion that a child can carry.

My daughter with her flowers

Now, I know I'm not the traditional parent. For those of you who don't know, my husband and I own a game shop. So, I'm raising my children in a very busy and non-traditional environment. However, we have back rooms away from the main store where the oldest can have television time and relaxation and the youngest can play with her toys and take naps. We don't have a big yard at the store to play in but I do often walk to the park and let my youngest play and even if we don't go to the park, my youngest likes me to put her in the stroller and stroll around the parking lot. We have a picnic table that she can sit on and she likes to sit outside and watch cars, birds, and trains. We also pick some of the only flowers available to us, dandelions. To her these are wishes and a bit of natural beauty in the city.

So, knowing now how I feel about dandelions and wishes and how important they are to my child, you can imagine how upset I was when the town decided to spray the nastiest smelling weed killer all over her dandelions as well as my mother-in-law's rose bush, which sits outside of our store.

This is my mother-in-law's rosebush (notice the brown and yellow) It is almost all dead today.

We couldn't go outside for three days because the smell was so atrocious (it literally burned my nostrils). My daughter got sick, probably from inhaling the fumes when the door opened, and all of her beautiful yellow and green wishes got turned brown. They are still there, mind you, still standing, but brown.

The dandelions after being sprayed.

So, not only did the city fail to do what they set out to do, but they destroyed something beautiful,

something that was special. They destroyed my daughter's wishes. So I'm writing this not only to rant, but to spread the dandelion love. Be aware of what you are doing and your impact on the environment and other human beings. If you're going to destroy something, first of all, make sure you really want it gone, and second of all, make sure that you do it the right way (if you really want to kill a dandelion, you have to pull it up by the root). Please enjoy the following articles and recipes on dandelions as well as your spring and summer.

Seeing those we've missed.

Life will Never work out the way we dream or plan it. There's always a bigger thing staring us in the face that is so big we can't see it until we're already too far into its tooth filled mouth.

I went again with fellow authors Lorenz Vassa Falls and Allana Lowe. I got to see a lot of people that were there last year and I got to meet a lot of new faces. I do hope to have some photos up soon (unfortunately not as many as last year, but still worth a look). I was dressed as Sapphire from The Ruby Mountains and a lot of people enjoyed my home made unicorn crown. Some people suggested that I sell the crowns next year (perhaps if there is time to make some I'll take this advice). A lot of children got some free wishing stones, so that also made me feel good. (Sometimes the little things can make all the difference). It was fantastic. I can't wait to go again next year. I definitely have to make this a full-time job...until then, have fun and keep reading.K. L. I write because I love to do it. I write because it is my primal instinct to create stories. Even before I could read, I wanted to look at intricate illustrations in order to make a story out of them. Telling stories is just what I've always done.
Now, I have learned over time that writing is more difficult if it is based on reality. That is why, as in the case of She's Facing Me I chose to write my autobiography in poetry. It comes naturally for me to tell my story to others in this way. However, that leaves many things open for interpretation. You may think you get it, but do you really? Some poems are pretty straight forward, but some are more abstract. The images that you get may be steeped in mythology, but there's something there that connects with my own reality, some parallel that exists in order for me to get out what must be said.
Sometimes, especially when I put my soul out there for everyone to read, it can make me weak. Sometimes I want to burn everything I've ever written, move to another country and start over. Those times are rare, but they do exist. Other times I look at my work and am humbled to be the vessel through which forces work to create these things.
I had a moment the other day that made me want to burn all my books and never write again. Someone said something about one of the poems, and they had an interpretation that I had never imagined. It was terribly offensive to someone that I love and I never meant to offend anyone by writing it. After all, it is a book about my own life, not the lives of others. Therefore it is steeped in my own emotions and no others. However, what they said to me made me wish that I had never written the poem.

Things like this are bound to happen when you are a writer!

I didn't burn the books, though, because I remembered who that book was for. It was for me, it was for my mother, and it was for a little girl that I've never met. I know she's out there somewhere. A little girl like I used to be. She needs the hope that this book brings. She needs to know that forgiveness is possible and she needs to know that life gets better.
Despite getting my feelings hurt and being embarrassed, I know that I put it in there for a reason. And it doesn't matter what anyone else makes it out to be. I have to respect the opinions and interpretations of others. After all, that is the point of the kind of poetry that I write. Not only does it speak to your emotions, it speaks to your imagination. I want it to inspire. I want you to have your own interpretation. After all, not everyone can listen to the same song and get the same feelings or images in their head. It is the same with my poetry. I never meant any offense to anyone when I wrote the book. So I will not apologize. Apologies are for the guilty. If you are offended, then that is something that you have put upon yourself. I still love the person that said it, just like I still love my mother. If anything, I take what they said to me as a lesson for the future.

So, I will continue to sell my work and let it be what it is. Whether you like it or not, I will continue. For me. For my mother and for that little girl.

Little girl, wherever you are, it does get better. I promise!K. L. The characters will make an appearance in the final work, but this poem (probably) won't. What does this mean to you, if anything?

Ghost of the Wandering Child

Are you me
or the woman I could be?

Is she here to make you remember
or did you call her here to forget?

This wandering child
alone in the world

crossed paths with your blade
the one regret you couldn't make

so she's back at your door
maybe in ghost form

she's wandering still,
just a chance meeting you here.

You never have to follow
she never has to see

Whether you're me
or just the woman I should be.

It sneaks up on me and then zips away before I even realized what just happened. That's how it is though.

I'm working on several exciting things. In the upcoming weeks, I'll be announcing some exciting contests, which will allow artists to become part of my website. I also have some artistic endeavors of my own which I hope will help get the word out about my previous writings.

Speaking of writing, I haven't forgotten what I love to do the most...

I have been working on not one, but two epic poems, a book of short stories (or perhaps a novel, depending on how it goes) with a character named Gracie. I think you'll like her. She's a little different from any other character that I've encountered in my writing ventures. I'm also collaborating with a good friend of mine on a book of nonfiction essays. Then there's the second Ruby Mountains with my daughter and finally the second Angels & Shadows, which is currently untitled, but I'm sure it will be named in the forthcoming months.

If that's not enough to keep a woman busy, there's the day to day things...laundry, yardwork, gardening, working part time at the library, and helping others publish their works through my publishing company Reimann Books.

So, I'd love to blog on here more and I will try to keep you updated. Until then, you can usually find me on facebook (through which I've recently given sneak peeks into the next Angels & Shadows. So it's worth checking out just for that). https://www.facebook.com/klstewartbooks

Until next time,

Have Fun! K. L. Stewarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01572817712343438774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1590583557437716043.post-82001991660426246172013-02-20T10:19:00.001-05:002013-02-20T10:35:49.823-05:00Talking Angels with Allana Lowe<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

This is a great place of healing and nonstop inspiration. For instance, just as I was leaving the house this morning, I noticed the way the morning sunlight sparkled off of the frost covered rocks in the driveway. To some this must have just been an act of nature, frost on rocks. To me, though, there was a story there. A meticulous tip-toeing of frost fairies throughout the night, gliding daintily along under bright beautiful stars...dancing and singing in circles, spiraling hand in hand...then there was the scene of the trees. Tall and dark, against the morning sun, with shadows coldly stretching out past the road, into the field beyond. What are they reaching for? I'm reminded of a dream. These are the things of my dreams. Shadow trees, stretching, invading territory beyond their own lands. Lurking tall and ominous against a distant light too far away for me to comprehend or fully understand...were there fairies nestled in the shadow trees, waiting to ambush me as I rode to work? Were they perhaps feeling angry that I left without properly thanking them after they had provided me with such sparkle and shine for my morning, or do they not care either way? Do they know that I even noticed their hard work one cold morning as I stepped into my car? Are they perhaps at war with each other, these creatures of light and creatures of shadow? One can only imagine what lies in the thoughts of invisibles...

...and so begins another story in my head...K. L. Stewarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01572817712343438774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1590583557437716043.post-59363281830822324872013-02-15T18:40:00.000-05:002013-02-15T18:40:50.800-05:00Angels & Shadows TriviaA lot of others don't understand how a story can change its shape over time. Angels & Shadows certainly evolved between its concept in 1995 to it's second release in 2013. Here are a few interesting things that you might like to know about the book.

1. The book was originally a short story concept. I started writing it in the summer between my 7th and 8th grade years in middle school.

2. My dark angels were originally vampires, but as it progressed, I decided that what I had created was really nothing like a vampire, so I made them into something altogether different.

3. In the original story, Sark was not a cold place. It actually took place in a more temperate climate.

4. Slatkin was originally supposed to turn to stone when he slept. The idea was that he was something like a gargoyle.

5. Amicus was originally a wizard, not a Shean god.

6. The Shean god Amicus got his name from the word Amigo. I remember it plainly. I was sitting in an 8th grade English class and someone said the word Amigo, and the word Amicus just came to me. I just thought it would be a cool name for a wizard.

7. The hunters were not even created until many years after writing the book. Originally, it was just a group of human characters. (I can't imagine the books without them now. The second book is grounded in their story!)

8. The original series title for the book (back in 1995) was Six Kinds, Two Lands, Two Times. (I still have a mixed tape that has that title. I recorded songs on it that helped me write.)

9. The original book was hand written in red ink (to be symbolic of blood).

10. I still have the first pen that I originally used to write the then short story. (It was a Bic ballpoint pen with a kind of Southwestern type design).

I hope these entertain for now. It's certainly great memories for me! Maybe I'll have more to share soon.
I've been thinking about life lately. It passes before we can get a full grasp of it. It's here and we're so busy living (or choosing not to live) that it really is gone in a wink. Looking through old writings today, I realized that I have numerous unfinished works that are really good. I should get them together and make something of them. As I searched through old notebooks and scraps of little papers that I had saved, I could remember exactly when some of them were created. It was almost like they froze that moment of my life. Many of them went back to (what I could not believe, even as I stared at the date) more than ten years ago. I started looking back to that time of my life and I couldn't believe how much time had past. Where have the years gone?

One thing that is for sure, since I graduated high school, the years have passed all too quickly. And since I got married in 2007, they've gone by so fast that they have all ran together. That must mean that I'm enjoying my life. It's true. I am. And why shouldn't I?

I'm living my dream...to write books. It's not exactly how I envisioned it, but that doesn't matter. What does matter is that I'm finding a way to make it happen. Now, no one can do things alone in this world, that is for sure. I have been blessed with a husband who is constantly pushing me to succeed, a daughter who is a muse like no other, and family and friends who are always there to support and love me no matter what else is going on in their lives.

Even those who lived before me, and who I miss dearly, are still guiding me in some way from wherever it is that they vanish to when they leave us. I know this because sometimes I can still feel them, leading me forward, guiding my heart to what is right.

So, I just want to ask, what is it that I can do for the world? I have some large shoes to fill if I am to ever be as great as my mother, father, and grandparents before me. They may have seemed to live small lives, but their love made them great people. I only hope that I can be as great as they are. To make the sacrifices that they have made, to overcome the things that they overcame. Until I can be as great as they are, being just another writer seems a small feat indeed! Tonight, as I write this, I am thankful that I came from this lineage, and that my ancestors are still with me, guiding me.

I am thankful. Truly thankful for my many blessings!

I read somewhere today that it takes ten years to become a known author. Ten long years. So, as I continue to write the second book of The Dark Angel Wars, I have faith that one day, it will be read by many. I want it to be read by many. I know it is not a series for everyone and I never intended it to be. My wish though, is that for the few (or perhaps many) who read it, they will treasure it the way that I treasure my favorites. Elizabeth Haydon, Lois Lowry, and Brian Froud books are certainly treasures to me among many others (including the obvious Tolkien and Rowling). So if you read it and enjoy it, pass it along, let others treasure it too. However, please purchase a copy for your friend. Remember, authors have to work just like everyone else and without your support, we cannot continue to create these treasures. We have to eat and pay bills just like everyone else. So read it and pass it along. Not just my books, but any author that you enjoy! Without you reading, our books will never see the light of day, and we will cease to be. Until then, read on!

The re-release of Angels & Shadows was on October 20th, 2012 at the Crystal Coast Con which took place at MacDaddy's in Cape Carteret, NC. It was a fun day, and there were a lot of neat costumes. I attended as Celeste, the dark angel of love. In addition to me, some of the other Reimann Books authors attended. Lorenz Falls was there selling not only copies of "The Viper's Advice", but he had some of his hand made walking sticks and wands. Allana Lowe, author of "The Angel Series" was there as well as Laureen Jones, author of "Tales of the Wish Fairies". Her sister, Linda, made another appearance as the fairy who glittered hair. (I got my hair glittered red by the glitter fairy and I must say, that I loved it!) And of course another famous fairy made an appearance, also with glittered hair, Victoria Leigh (Ruby) was on hand to sign copies of "The Ruby Mountains".

Other than the Reimann Books table, there were also many other things to see and people to meet. This was a successful and fun event. I can't wait until next year, and I must say "Thanks!" to everyone who showed up to both show support and purchase copies. You helped make this event great for all of us. Happy reading until next time!

That time of year has come again. The Crystal Coast Con at MacDaddy's in Cape Carteret will be on October 20th. What better way to celebrate this event than with the re-release of Angels & Shadows? The 2nd edition book has a new cover, a glossary and a couple of lines that didn't make it into the 1st edition. I'm very excited to present this to my readers. So many people have told me that I should do my own artwork because I know my characters and story better than anyone else. Well, I listened. I did my own artwork and added a glossary for all those character names! I hope that the book will now become what I've been working for it to be for many years. Please enjoy, and oh yeah, don't forget to purchase a copy! Book 2 is in the works, and you'll be lost without reading the first one!K. L. Stewarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01572817712343438774noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1590583557437716043.post-79483432014166398572012-08-27T08:46:00.001-04:002012-08-27T08:46:50.711-04:00Writing LatelyI haven't written in a while, and this is due to many things. Holding a full-time job was one of them. I have been working at a hotel, running our store in Richlands, NC and taking care of my family. However, I've recently taken on a part time job at a library, which has freed up my weekends for writing. So Book 2 is coming together nicely now. I just wrote a part between Belle and Evingh (remember them) that I enjoyed very much, and I hope that the reader enjoys this on many levels. There will be more to come soon, so I will keep you all updated very soon! I have many projects that I'm playing with right now, and I hope to have new works and some re-works out very soon.

Until Then,
I do have some exciting things going on in the writing world. I'm in the works on some changes to Angels and Shadows that I think everyone will appreciate. I also am working on some marketing ideas for the book. The new Angels and Shadows will have some guides in the back for those who have a hard time keeping up with the characters and names. I also am in the works for a new cover. I've listened to my readers' feedback, and the new cover will be targeting an older age group. I have loved all the covers that I've had, but a change is needed and I believe it is one that will carry through the series. With that said, some progress has been made on book two in the series, but I'll admit that it is not nearly as far as I thought that I would be by now. I do hope to get a lot of writing done soon. In the meantime, you can check out The Print House and Emporium by Reimann Books located at 103 N. Wilmington St. in Richlands, NC. That's where you can purchase the books and perhaps get a copy signed.
K. L. Without these things we are left with fear, ignorance and spite. If we all treat others the way we want to be treated, and take the time to enjoy what we are blessed with, then we will suddenly see the world as a better place. Everyone gets stressed. Everyone gets in bad moods, but more often than not, people feel and react to what is going on around them. I'm tired of a decade of war, fear, and bad tempers. No one is better than me, and I am no better than anyone else. We were all CREATED equal...but depending on how we live our lives and what we contribute to others depends on our worth. Maybe you all don't care about anyone else, but I know my worth. Sometimes I may come up short, but I do my best to improve my world, even if it's giving a smile when it feels like a frown. I only ask that it be returned.

Is this making you angry? That is not my intent. Am I getting too preachy? I hope not. I've just had a really bad day, but in the end I have a lot to smile about...I'm forgetting all of the bad, and holding on to the good...my hope, and my love. I hope you will do the same.K. L. under the boughs of snow covered trees
black and burning, all look the same
as snow and ash collide, battling for winter

I am blinded and carried away
by currents, water of melted ice
slipping by hunters and their prey

If the hunters keep the angels fighting
will they come for me, rescue me
as I get swept away from these things
this dream I hold to, this hope I cling to?K. L. I'm adding things, subtracting things, re-wording things and in some cases re-writing entire chapters. I would love to post some new material, but there is nothing that I'm willing to release. All I can say is that the Dark Angel Wars series may be divided into "Angel" Books and "Shadow" Books. It's an idea that I'm playing with. It is appropriate for the material that I am writing for book 2, but I have to really think this through, because I could be toying with the future...which could be dangerous if I don't think it through. After all, the twelve books could easily turn into 24 books if I do this. Let me know what you think. I value the input of my readers.K. L.
